Volosko in the past
Volosko
is mentioned for the first time in 1563 as a part of manorial estate
of Kastav, but the settlement is probably older. A famous travel writer,
J.W. Valvasor, mentions Volosko in his work «Slava vojvodine Kranjske»
and depicts it as a «small settlement, but very pleasant». The baroque
church with two bell towers was constructed in 1708. At that time Volosko
was under the domination of Kastav. It had a small harbor and a customs
office. French occupation (1809-1813) helped the development of Volosko
when Kastav lost its dominant part with the new territorial administration
and Volosko gradually took over its own functions.
The
first buildings in Volosko were constructed around "mandrać".
Still today this area is recognized for its irregular, narrow, cobbled
footpaths. Here is where we find the original layer of small fishermen's
houses with simple facades, small roof houses, and picturesque chimneys
and hearths with protuberances on external walls. The buildings of the
settlement follow the configuration of the terrain so that layers of houses
descend toward the inlet creating an amphitheatre effect.
Along A. Štangera street are the predominant "captains's houses"
with balconies above beautiful entrances. These were constructed in the
18th and 19th centuries during the height of maritime affairs and remain
spectacular even today. Larger buildings and Villas were constructed on
the borders of the settlement which today are considered some the most
beautiful architure in Europe.
Volosko today
Only
1 kilometer from Opatija and part of the Croatian Riviera, Volosko boasts
the most picturesque harbor. The Lungomare "sea walk" begins
here and meanders along the coastline for 7 miles. Volosko harbor offers
intimate cafes and world-class seafood restaurants tucked among small
fishing boats and nets hung to dry.
The bay, with its mild winds, is a paradise for windsurfers in the morning
and sailboats all day. This incomparable area is a mecca for the arts:
music, dance and painting.
